-EMERSON SPICE HOTEL ROOMS-

MIMI

Emerson Spice Hotel Rooms all have a fabulously unique story;

Mimi’s friends are artists and intellectuals; she, a seamstress. She has no space, yet she is omnipresent; she’s a frail waif, a bewintered sparrow dependent on her feminine wiles and the crumbs of friends and lovers, which, for her, means perching in male nests. Likewise, Mimi is an anomalous room for this hotel. Graced by arches, frilly balconies, and curved stained glass windows, every other space gushes feminine, while this room Mimi smacks of a boy’s space from the instant entered.

No curved stained glass windows, only two arches and no balcony, frilled or unfrilled. When you cross the threshold, you sense it is lofty (sorry), and you are immediately confronted by an alpha male space, circa 1900 Zanzibari colonial, shortly after the opera was premiered. The view is of Zanzibari characteristic roof tops, minarets, and church spires. The furniture is of the period, even some chairs of what I call “proto-IKEA,” made pre-fab, pre-WWI by a Norwegian company and traded one chair, one measure of cloves.

We are filling this room with its own art collection. We have the honor to present two life-size angels standing on easels from a now renowned exhibition called “Letters to Abu” by Jan Van Esch, a Dutch-Tanzanian artist. Elias Ciprian Mkumbo, a leading young Tanzanian sculptor, has graced us with two busts of Mimi, one of clay and one of wood.

    Best Restaurant Recommendation in Stone Town
    One of the best Restaurants in Stone Town to try local food. The food was full of positive surprises in taste combinations. The staff are kind and serve your food with a smile on. Would recommend it to anyone who is planning to visit Stone Town.

    Favourite hotel room in the world
    The north room at Emerson on Hurumzi is probably my favourite hotel room in the world. It’s like being in a fairy tale. One side of the room consists of ‘French’ windows which open to a balcony with the most amazing ocean view ever. If you open all the windows it gives you the illusion you’re sleeping outside and with being so high up it’s like sleeping in ‘heaven’. Then there’s the massive stone tub which easily fits two people, and it’s partially in the open air so I can highly recommend having a late night bath while gazing at the moon and stars. The staff are absolutely amazing, professional and efficient and above all super friendly, like most people are on the island. In short, Emerson on Hurumzi is probably one of the most authentic Zanzibari experiences you could ask for.
    Fabulous Hotel!
    The photos do not do this property justice. It is a fabulous hotel! Incredibly unique, pristinely decorated, in a fantastic location, with very attentive and accommodating service. I, undoubtedly, will stay here on my next visit to Stone Town! It would be a missed opportunity to not stay here, I highly recommend it!

    Authentic Architectural Symbol in Zanzibar
    Myself and my partner decided to stay here the night before we left the island and it was a very good choice. The building is an authentic architectural symbol in Zanzibar Stonetown. The Room was spacious and full of character and great features, silent and peaceful despite being in the middle of the city.  We also had dinner on the roof top with a set menu, full of flavours and variety of dishes combined with local food and spices.
    We LOVE this hotel
    Our 4th stay at Emerson Spice and certainly not the last! We LOVE this hotel! Being here is not just a normal hotel stay – its an experience. Fantastic decor, and extremely friendly staff. No trip to Zanzibar is complete without a lunch in “The Secret Garden” and dinner on their rooftop.,. It really is a very special property indeed!

    The Best Hotels In Zanzibar Ranked & Reviewed (2020)
    The rooms are filled with antique furniture and rich textures. Small touches like locally produced soaps and towels, antique books and even air con are featured in each room. Passion has been poured into the Emerson Spice and it is obvious. We felt as if we’d cast away in the days of old. Time slowed down and we soaked up the atmosphere of the buzzing Stone Town streets from our private balcony.
    Place I enjoy staying in Stone Town
    We spent 3 nights at this hotel in September and it was everything I could have hoped. The uniqueness of the hotel and how it fitted into the local ‘street-scape’ made it the type of place I really enjoy staying at. Each room has its own amazing theme and as soon as you enter you feel like you are in another world. Centrally located in Stone Town the staff are warm and welcoming.
